5S’s Four facts about Beijing 2008

Fact 1 – The host country can enter every event in the games.

Fact 2 – 204 countries and 10,708 athletes are competing in the Olympics.

Fact 3 – The mascots are: Beibei (fish), Jingjing (panda), Huanhuan (Olympic Torch), Yingying (Tibetan Antelope), Nini (swallow).

Fact 4 – The Olympic Torch starts at Mt Olympus and at Beijing it was lit by a gold medal gymnast.

    To be healthy

You should not be too thin or too fat. You should be able to walk up a flight of stairs without getting puffed. You need a balanced diet and plenty of exercise and don’t take drugs or smoke. If you are healthy you don’t get sick as much. Eating too much junk food is unhealthy. Don’t starve yourself to look thin. Play a sport. Don’t damage your body by over working it.

Hope you enjoy our class’ ideas!

    G’day fellow rappers,

Four interesting facts that we have learnt about the Olympic Games in Beijing:

    * The Aquatic Centre is known as the Water Cube. It is made from 100 000 square metres of plastic type pillows and holds 11 000 people. It looks like an ice cube when lit from inside.

    * The Equestrian events are being held in Hong Kong which is 1971 kilometres away from Beijing. This shows what a big country China is!

    * Michael Phelps is trying to win eight gold medals in swimming during the games. Previously seven gold medals is the most that any one athlete has won.

    * There are 434 Australian athletes competing and 11468 altogether from around the world.

We think that being healthy is important for both the body and the mind. We need to exercise, have a healthy diet including drinking lots of fresh water, rest and be friendly and happy.

We are holding a mini Olympics at our school this week. We have all been given a country and will compete in teams with students from Kindergarten to Year 6. We are looking forward to reading your responses.

Four interesting facts about the Olympics are:

    1) The torch is actually made out of aluminium and can be recycled.
    2) Each letter of the mascots make up Beijing Huang Ying Ni, which is “Beijing wlecomes you”
    3) The ancient Olympic Games grew and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years!
4)The five Olympic rings were designed in 1913, adopted in 1914 and debuted at the Games at Antwerp, 1920.

We think that being healthy is important because if you are not healthy you can be teased at school/adults at work for being weaker. You shouldn’t be too thin or fat. If you are a picky eater, you might become seriously ill, so a healthy diet is important. We suggest each day you should have alot of fruit, vegetables, drink plenty of water, have dairy products and even meat is good for you.

Something extremely important is that you shouldn’t take drugs or smoke. As said on television, smoking can cause lung cancer. Although the things on TV are disgusting, they are real. No kidding.

Four interesting facts about the Olympics…

    * Women were not allowed to watch the first Olympic Games… the penalty was death

    * The steel shell in the stadium in Beijing if laid out straight would stretch for 36kms

    * The steel shell is heavier than the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

    * The stadium is designed to stand up to an earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter Scale.

Being healthy is very important to us at Glenroi Heights PS in Orange.

We are very fit, as more than half of every class walk to school and also walk to the shops in town about 2 kms away. Some ride their bikes. We think we are lucky living in the country where you can do this safely and without being afraid.

Many of our students belong to the school Aboriginal dance group and we are practising hard for the Eisteddfod. Others are very keen training for the PSSA athletic carnival this Friday. You have to be fit to be able to do this in 5 degree temperatures. All of the students run around the school ground twice before classes begin.

As well as exercising we know it is important to eat good foods, our canteen does not sell chips and lollies any more.

    Being healthy means:
    * Eating healthy food everyday, especially foods from the healthy food pyramid.
    * Having regular daily fitness/exercise activities for a half to one hour.
    * Eating foods with lots of calcium for our growing bones.
    * Eating lots of fruit and drinking 6-8 glasses of water everyday as well.

    FOUR INTERESTING OLYMPIC FACTS:

    * At the Opening Ceremony, a Chinese athlete was winched high into the air to run around the top of Bird’s Nest Stadium and then light the Olympic Cauldron.

    * The Australian soccer team played well because the players were spread across the field, while their opposition team was clumped together.

    * When playing water polo, the players must tread water for the whole game.

    * Equestrian is an event where the competitors must ride a horse – but who gets to wear the medal, the person or their horse?

We used Google search engine to find today’s official medal tally. Our search terms were “medal tally” Olympics, but we had to look very carefully because some of the top sites that came up were for Athens 2004, not Beijing 2008.

So far, Australia has three gold, two silver and five bronze medals. Australia is coming sixth!

    Hi everyone,

Here are some interesting facts which 4/3B have learnt about the Beijing Olympics:

    - The Beijing Olympic medals are made from jade and gold.
    - There were more than 15 000 performers in the Opening Ceremony.
    - In the Opening Ceremony they used 19 000 rounds of fireworks (Did you know that the Chinese invented fireworks?)
    - The Olympic Torch was taken to the top of Mt Everest (Qomolangma) by mountaineers.

4/3B think that to be healthy you should be able to do moderate exercise without getting puffed. We agree that rest is important to keep you healthy as well as exercise and a good diet. If you don’t do these things you could end up obese and this could make you very ill with diseases such as Type 2 diabetes. Some people with Type 2 diabetes can get rid of the disease just by changing their lifestyle to eating more healthily and exercising regularly.

Being healthy doesn’t mean trying to become really thin. If you are too skinny you can be just as likely to get sick as if you are too fat. You need to try to be a healthy weight with a healthy lifestyle to keep you fit.

We hope you are enjoying watching the Olympic Games as much as we are.

    Hello,

This is Ella, Christine and Jessica. We are from Mowbray Public School, 5S.

During Term 3 we have been learning about the aspects of the Olympic Games. Firstly we have been learning about the Chinese mascots and what they represent. Beibei represents water. JingJing represents the forest. YingYing represents earth. HuanHuan represents fire. Nini represents air.

We have also learned about the Australian team that traveled to China. We have been reading and watching the news in class. We learned that everyone from all over the world come together to celebrate this special event.

In class we do activities that are based on the Olympic and sports in it. We have had a walk-a-thon to raise money for the Olympics and for new interactive white boards. We are making board games based on a sport in the Olympics.

At Mowbray being healthy means a lot. Our teachers encourage us to be healthy, like having a Healthy Harold day. Every Monday and Wednesday we have athletics and fitness. The athletics carnival has just gone by and we have learnt many things about athletics. We also have P.S.S.A sport. There are two netball teams and two soccer teams. Being healthy is important because it keeps you happy and not moody.

You have all provided interesting facts about the Olympics, and offered excellent advice about being healthy and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Congratulations on your great efforts!

I was watching an Olympic report that described Michael Phelps’ daily diet – it’s incredible! He eats more for breakfast than most people eat for the entire day. He needs this fuel for his body as he uses so much energy training and competing. I’m glad that I don’t have to shop for him every week!

It’s time for the athletics events to start. I’m looking forward to being entertained by more memorable Olympic moments.

Rap point 2 responses will start next week. You have two weeks for this, so there is plenty of time to read, enjoy and discuss The Shaggy Gully Times, as well as watching the Olympics and celebrating BOOK WEEK and the CBCA winners! Try to spend some extra time studying Bruce Whatley’s illustrations because they really support and add extra humour and meaning to Jackie French’s written text.

Exercise is also important. Playing ruby, skipping, tips and etc at school during recesss and lunch is great. If you and your family can walk to school and play at the park on weekends that is also healthy. You don’t need to do a team sport to be doing healthy excercise.

    What is healthy?

5/6K agrees with the statement. We believe that balance is the key to a healthy lifestyle. This means eating healthy most of the time but occasionally having treats. This balance we think also applies to physical activity. We think it is important to stay active by playing a sport, going for a walk, going to the park with the family or walking the dog and doing these kinds of things regularly.

It is also important to remember that different things work for different people. We must do what works for us and make being healthy a lifestyle not an event.

3/4S rappers at Thornleigh West noticed that at the Olympics, Australia came 6th in the medal tally. This year was the last chance to watch some sports compete, while for the first time we watched new sports. The rules seemed harder and athletes needed to be in top condition. We also didn’t know that some countries existed until we saw their results.

Our class also discussed that being healthy just isn’t about eating healthy food, you have to be physically active as well. You need to think about the choices you make. A healthy person has a self positive self image, is well rested and has a balance in activities.
